Karmeier to administer oath to new attorneys

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier will preside and administer the attorney's oath when 105 new lawyers are admitted to practice in ceremonies in Carbondale on Thursday, Nov. 8.
Swansea attorney Thomas Q. Keefe, Jr. and St. Clair County Circuit Judge Lloyd A. Cueto will be on hand to help welcome the group of attorneys which includes their sons.
Keefe will make the motion to admit the class. His son, Thomas Q. Keefe III, is a member of the class.
Judge Cueto, from the 20th Judicial Circuit, will second the motion to admit the class. His son, Lloyd M. Cueto, also is a member of the class.
The group is among 2,351 men and women who were certified as candidates and will be sworn in as Illinois attorneys at ceremonies in the state's five Supreme Court judicial districts.
The Carbondale program in the Fifth Judicial District will begin at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Lesar School of Law Building, which is located on the campus of Southern Illinois University.
Justice Karmeier will preside over the ceremony and welcome the members of the class to the practice of law. SIU School of Law Dean
Peter C. Alexander will welcome members of the class, families and friends to the law school.
Mark Hassakis, third vice-president of the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA), will be the opening speaker. Hassakis, is a practitioner with the firm of Hassakis and Hassakis, P.C. in Mt. Vernon.
Other guests of the Illinois Supreme Court will be: Appellate Judge James M. Wexstten from the Fifth Judicial District; Circuit Court Judges Brad K. Bleyer from the 1st Judicial Circuit and Bennie Joe Harrison from the 2nd Judicial Circuit; and Associate Judges William H. Wilson and Christy Solverson, both from the 1st Judicial Circuit.
A reception will follow.
All of the candidates have passed the Illinois State Bar Examination and an ethics examination; and were certified by the Committee on Character and Fitness.
The new attorneys will bring the total number of licensed attorneys in Illinois to approximately 84,000.
