Hoffman's fund-raising adds to war chest

State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Collinsville, raised about four times as much money in the first half of the year than his Republican challenger, Glen Carbon businessman Dwight Kay, campaign finance records show.
The two face each other in the November general election.
Hoffman, who is seeking his ninth two-year term, raised $106,780 between Jan. 1 and June 30, while Kay raised $26,230.20.
Of the 34 individual contributions made to Kay's campaign, five of those totaling $1,950 were from persons or groups from out of state or out of the area.
Hoffman received 79 individual itemized contributions totaling $61,760 and 63 of those totaling $49,150 were from individuals or groups from out of state or out of the area.
Contributors from outside the metro area who donated to Kay include the Chicago law firm Roddy Leahy Guill & Zima with $500; the Westfield Group of Westfield Center, Ohio, an insurance company, with $500; Ronald Risher of Fenton, Mo. with $500 and Charles Groen of Chicago with $450.
Outside contributions to Hoffman's campaign include AECOM Technology of Los Angeles, an engineering firm, with $1,500; engineers Bernardin Lochmueller & Associates Inc. of Evansville, Ind. with $5,000; Cottonwood Financial Ltd of Irving, Texas. with $2,500; Entran of Chicago, a transportation engineering firm with $5,000; Jay Homedi, CEO of the Accurate Group, a real estate appraisal firm, with $5000 and $2,500 from Motorola in Schaumburg.
Hoffman started the year with a sizable war chest of $734,924.71, dwarfing Kay's campaign coffers.
Hoffman spent $63,163.57, largely on staff and office expenses, as well as printing and postage, and had $742,896.35 available as of June 30. He also has $500,000 invested.
Kay had expenditures totaling $11,056.28 for items including printing and office expenses. He had $17,676.76 on hand as of June 30.
