Alton wants to demolish derelict property

8/25/2008 2:45 PM

The City of Alton wants a derelict property inside city limits to be demolished.

Alton filed the demolition suit in Madison County Circuit Court Aug. 14 against True Family Company alleging property at 2322 Locust is so deteriorated that it constitutes a dangerous and unsafe structure.

According to the complaint, the vacant structure and land is blighted and adversely affects public health and safety.

The city alleges that grading and drainage problems allow stagnant water on the property and within the structure, the sidewalks and driveways are incomplete, rubbish, garbage and junk litter the property and the yard lacks maintenance.

According to the city, the total cost to repair the defects which cause the property to be dangerous and unsafe exceed the market value of the property when repaired and improved.

The city alleges True Family has ignored, failed and refused to adequately repair or demolish the property despite demands.

A court order is being sought to allow the city to demolish the building as well as to place a lien on it.

Assistant City Attorney Allan Napp represents Alton in the case.
