Man sues doctor over wrist treatment

11/24/2008 10:17 AM

William J. Coleman has filed suit against an Illinois doctor, alleging his wrist was further damaged after the doctor failed to appropriately treat it.

Coleman went to Dr. Francis Kayira's Hillsboro office on Nov. 19, 2006, for treatment of his dislocated wrist, according to the complaint filed Nov. 17 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Kayira then directed Coleman to obtain medical care in East St. Louis, but Kayira did not send Coleman to the city in a timely manner, the suit states.

Eventually, Coleman claims he was forced to have surgery on his right wrist at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital, but sustained death of a portion of his scaphoid and the non-union of the bone's fragments.

He also experienced pain and suffering, incurred medical costs, suffered disability to his right wrist and hand and lost his enjoyment of a normal life, according to the complaint.

Kayira was negligent because he failed to provide proper supervision over the nurses who provided Coleman's care, failed to timely and appropriate care for Coleman's wrist injury and failed to direct the radiologist immediately report the results of the x-rays to him, the suit states.

Kayira also negligently failed to promptly obtain and review the x-ray report taken of the right wrist, failed to promptly refer Coleman to an orthopedic surgeon for evaluation, failed to understand the injury to the right wrist required immediate diagnosis, allowed Coleman to go for an extended period of time without any reduction of the dislocated wrist and failed to provide appropriate treatment, Coleman claims.

He is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs.

Brent D. Holmes of Heller, Holmes and Associates in Mattoon will be representing him.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 08-L-588.
